(1896-1987) was one of the major early French Surrealist painters. A close friend of Andre Breton, Joan Miro and Max Ernst, he joined the Surrealist movement in the early 20s. Andre Breton, for instance,
celebrated the chemistry of the intellect" that marked for him Masson as the painter who understood the full implications of the surrealist project.

1954 - Exhibits six works at Venice Biennale. Wins Grand Prix National
for Painting
1958 - Retrospective of engravings by L'Albertina, Vienna. More than 30 works at Venice Biennale.
1964 - Retrospective at Akademie der Kunst, Berlin
1965 - Restrospective at Musee National d'Art Moderne, Paris.
1967 - Drawings at the Musee National d'Art Moderne
1976 - Retrospective at MOMA, New York then to Houston and Paris. First retrospective of drawings at Musee d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris.
